The anticipated development on the East Boston piers is already showing a ripple effect on the housing market in East Boston with the decision to develop a massive 209 unit loft style condo building on Porter Street, midway between the waterfront and the airport.
Originally slated as a hotel, the project will now become a loft condominium project. It is the first evidence that the sweeping plans to develop residential complexes on the piers will transform many of the old industrial sections of East Boston even areas such as this one, blocks from the water.
Atrium Suites. LLC will build the Atrium Lofts at 156 Porter Street, an industrialized section of East Boston. The building is 250,000 square feet of unused industrial space, three and a half stories tall. It had been used as offices, warehouse space and industrial activities in the past. There will be 220 condominiums, a new one and one half story rooftop addition, a new Atrium pavilion and a 180 space parking garage below grade long with another with another 132 parking space lot on the street. Located on 3 acres in the industrial section of East Boston, the building was constructed in the early 1900s as a factory. It is currently vacant.
Adding to the attractiveness of the project which currently sits across directly from the ramps from Route 1A North into the airport, is that the ramps will be removed as part of the Central Artery Tunnel Project, meaning the complex will directly abut a newly designed Memorial Park when completed.
